Dual Credit Programming

What is Dual Credit?

Dual credit allows high school students to earn credits in high school and college at the same time.

Olds College and Chinook's Edge have offered dual credit by using CTS and college credit in welding, equine, carpentry, machining, fashion and landscape construction on-site, online, and in blended environments.

Who is eligible?

Grade 11 and 12 students are eligible for dual credit.

Students need to be prepared for the expectations and rigors of a post-secondary course.

Students interested in participating must be approved by their high school. Students then complete an application package, including a responsibility agreement and a written statement of intent.

What courses will be available?

In 2011-2012, we have tentative plans to offer courses in welding, machining, landscape construction, equine, and fashion marketing.

Final course information and application packages will be available from your high school before the end of May for the first semester and before the end of November for the second semester.

First dual accreditation program exceeding expectations
March 23, 2009

Twenty-four Chinook’s Edge students are in the homestretch of a unique equine program that will earn them two high school credits and two Olds College credits. The students are enrolled in the Community Learning Campus program ‘So You Love Horses.” They spent the past several weeks at their own high schools learning the theory components of the course through distributed online learning. On March 20, they gathered at the Olds College Riding Arena to participate in a practical hands-on lab that was led by students in the Olds College Equine Science program.

“I didn’t think there would be things like this I could do when my family moved from Red Deer,” said Courtney Luke, a grade 10 student at Delburne Centralized School. “I thought the bigger city school I was leaving behind had more to offer, but I’ve never heard of this kind of course being offered in the city. It’s so nice that students in all the high schools were offered this opportunity – not just students who are familiar with horses. One student has never been around horses before and she’s here doing very well.” (more)
