Every year as we approach the cold weather season, we are asked about our policy regarding busing in inclement weather. It's important you know that we take busing decisions seriously. The safety of your children is foremost. We would like to take a moment to answer a few common questions so that everyone is clear on what to expect the next time we face extreme weather conditions.

Why is the choice made to not have school buses run?

In Chinook's Edge there are a number of factors that go into making the decision on whether or not to cancel bus routes on a particular day.

  • The only time a cancellation for the entire School Division will occur is in the case of extremely cold temperatures. When it's colder than -35 degrees Celsius, or when the wind-chill makes it feel like colder that -40 degrees Celsius, the Director of Transportation will make a decision to cancel all of the bus routes.
  • In the case of blizzards or other inclement weather, individual bus drivers make decisions.

The reason for this is because of the size of our school division. There have been times when one end of the division is sunny and the other is experiencing a blizzard. We have learned that Bus Drivers are in the best position to judge the conditions of the roads in their area.

When do you decide to cancel a bus route?

When a Division-wide cancellation occurs, a decision will be made by 6:30 am, or in some cases the night before. Bus Drivers also make individual decisions about their morning run by this time.

If buses don't run in the morning do they run in the afternoon?

If bus routes are cancelled in the morning due to inclement weather conditions they are also cancelled in the afternoon. When buses are cancelled in the morning due to fog they will run in the afternoon unless parents are otherwise notified.

When you are aware that a storm or extremely cold weather system is on its way, could you cancel bus routes the night before?

Sometimes, as we all know, weather in Alberta can change quickly. Although forecasters are becoming more accurate in predicting weather conditions, there are still times when the actual weather is different from what was forecast. If we cancel buses based on a forecast, and then the weather is significantly better than expected, we lose an important day of schooling without a good reason. A morning cancellation allows us to respond to actual weather conditions.

How can I learn about bus cancellations?

When a decision is made to cancel a bus route or all the bus routes, you can expect to receive an automated call or a call from either your Bus Driver or our Division Office. Also, we immediately inform a number of local radio stations. These stations do a good job of getting the information out to their listeners.

For information, please listen to:
  • CKGY 95.5 fm - Red Deer
  • Big 105.5 fm - Red Deer
  • 66 CFR am - Calgary
  • Q91 am - Drumheller
  • CBC 1010 - Calgary
  • Country 105 fm - Calgary
  • 96.5 - CKFM - Olds and area
  • ZED 99 - Red Deer

If buses aren't running will the schools still be open?

The school or schools may be closed as a result of inclement weather or extremely poor road conditions. Parents/Guardians will be notified by the automated PowerAnnounce System. Radio stations will be advised of the closures as well. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date at the schools.

What is expected of my child regarding missed work for days when buses aren't running?

This is a question that is best answered by each of our schools. We have some schools where the entire student population is bused. There are other schools where a significant portion of students walk or drive to school. Because of the diversity of means of transportation, we encourage schools to make decisions based on the best interest of students at the school. If you have questions, please phone your school.
