Board Highlights, March 8

Capital Plan 2016-2021:
The Board approved an updated Capital Plan, which represents the highest capital priorities in the division. An extensive study was undertaken by the Facilities Committee, to ensure objective guidelines are used to determine the updated report. The report will be filed with the Alberta Government as follows : 1) expansion of Carstairs Elementary School to meet demographics and community growth; 2) expansion of Jessie Duncan School in Penhold to meet demographics and community growth; 3) H.J Cody High School modernization in Sylvan Lake, which remains the division’s highest modernization priority; 4)  expansion of École Olds Elementary School to meet demographics and community growth; 5) replacement of current Penhold Elementary School with a new 500 capacity replacement school; 6) request for a new 500 capacity Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4 school in Carstairs.

Transportation fees for 2017-2018 school year:
The Board passed a motion to retain this year’s fee level for students being transported to schools of choice or who live within 2.4 km of the school. This remains within the Alberta Government’s fee schedule as presented in Bill 1 ‘The Act to Reduce School Fees’, which was tabled with the legislature last week. Letters to parents and guardians whose children are affected by the school of choice fee are forthcoming.

The next meeting of the Board is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
